TVET Project

Special Education Early Childhood Primary Secondary Tertiary Life-Long Learning

Projects

The unit has administrative responsibility for the following three projects:

1. Income-Generating Project

The purpose of this project is to establish income-generating projects in educational institutions throughout the island. While generating additional funds these projects also promote entrepreneurship in the schools. Projects implemented and undertaken cover all five vocational areas.

2. TVET Rationalisation Project

The purpose of this project is to rationalise the existing Technical and Vocational programmes in the secondary system by the upgrading of present instructors and technical and vocational laboratories. “Centres of Excellence” are established and schools are organised into clusters in the pilot parishes, St. Elizabeth and Westmoreland. This project also involves the sharing of resources, where student access their preferred options in their geographic cluster.

3. TVET Improvement Project

This project was in effect from 1997 to 2002. It was co-ordinated with the assistance of the Japanese Government - Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) - and was aimed at establishing an improved quality of TVET in Technical High Schools in Jamaica. The project was piloted at the Jose Marti Technical High School.

The main objectives were:

1. To improve TVET curricular, facilities and equipment in the areas of:
· Computer Assisted Drafting (CAD)
· Electronics
· Automechanics
· Machine Shop Engineering

2. To disseminate improved TVET to other Technical High Schools in Jamaica.

The project offered assistance through the use of experts in the respective areas, the building of laboratories, and the donation of machinery and equipment to the Jose Martí Technical High School.

All Technical High Schools benefited from this project through training in all areas administered both locally and in Japan. Curriculum guides were developed and are currently being implemented in the school system. Although the project has ended, JICA continues to provide support for the programmes by assisting senior volunteers in developing and implementing an Equipment Maintenance Management Programme, for the state-of-the-art equipment provided by the project. They also offer expertise in Curriculum Development & Delivery.
